"Moon Cue" Early Work by Joel Hercek PDF Print E-mail

Joel Hercek is the cue maker that was taught by Burton Spain, the famous blank maker and cue maker. In the early 1990s, the two worked together so that Joel could learn the trade and take over the business. It is no surprise that Joel makes one of the most sought after cues on the market today. Ordering a cue from Joel means waiting ten years before your name makes it to the top of his list of waiting customers; he only makes 20-25 cues annually.

Joel makes cues in the traditional sense but adds his own contemporary flavor. His cues are some of the very best built cues on the market today. The basis of his construction is the full splice with veneers. Every one of his cues are constructed this way. This particular cue stick features a very rare design. First, the inlays in the butt are inspired by a Burton Spain design called the Moon Design. Those ivory inlays are framed by stacked veneered rings that are rarely seen on Hercek's cues. Furthermore, the veneered rings are made a special way that is time consuming but visually beneficial. Also, the veneers on the points are a rare color combination exhibiting a very rare yellow veneer as the inner-most veneer, something that is quite rare in Hercek's work. The cue is one of Joel's earlier cues and really shows Spain's influence on Joel's work. The cue is unchalked, in mint condition, and resides in the collection of Deno Andrews.
